LEAF - Low Emission Advanced Fuels

The Engadin mountain railways test advanced LEAF fuels

"The Engadin mountain railways have been committed to sustainable projects and improvements for years. A key component of this is continuous investment in infrastructure, such as the Nair Pitschen natural reservoir, which is currently being built by Engadin St. Moritz Mountains. This small lake with an area of 51,000 m² and a storage volume of 300,000 m³ will reduce the annual electricity requirements of the mountain railway- and catering operations by 1 GWh, which corresponds to almost 10 % of the total electricity requirement.

In addition, alternative drive systems and advanced fuels are constantly being tested and integrated into operations. Adrian Jordan, Head of Snow Sports & Mountain Experiences, explains: "This year, we used GTL and LEAF R100 (HVO) fuels for testing purposes during the construction of the reservoir. The products are characterised by their very low ecotoxicity, but differ in their properties and are therefore suitable for different areas of application. If you want to minimise CO₂- emissions, LEAF R100 is a very good choice. However, if considerations such as cost-effectiveness and cold-temperature resistance are paramount, GTL is the optimum solution. For a combination of both criteria, LEAF Alpine R50 is a good choice. We are planning further tests this winter in order to continuously improve our mountain experience offering in terms of sustainability."
