FAQ
"R" stands for Renewable
In LEAF and International, the "R" in the product name stands for "renewable". This indicates that a significant proportion of the fuel in a mixture is based on renewable sources.
"B" stands for Biological
In LEAF and International, the "B" in the product name stands for "biological". This indicates that a significant proportion of the fuel in a mixture is based on biogenic sources.
"S" stands for Synthetic
In LEAF and International, the "S" in the product name stands for "synthetic". This indicates that a significant proportion of the fuel in a mixture is based on synthetic sources. These can be of fossil or renewable origin.
What are alternative fuels?
Alternative fuels are fuels that are not derived from crude oil. A distinction is made between the following alternative fuels:
- Biofuels / Biogenic fuels
- Hydrogen
- Synthetic fuels
How do alternative fuels contribute to reducing emissions?
Alternative fuels such as HVO and GTL fuel burn much cleaner than conventional petroleum-based fuels and reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. In addition, the use of LEAF R100 (HVO) instead of fossil diesel offers a reduction in net CO₂- emissions of up to 84 % compared to fossil diesel.
What is GTL Fuel and how is it produced?
GTL Fuel is a fuel based on natural gas. In the so-called Gas-to-Liquid- process, natural gas is converted into synthesis gas by adding oxygen and water vapour, which is then converted into hydrocarbons in a Fischer-dropsch-synthesis process.
GTL is completely sulphur-free and contains neither aromatic compounds nor organic nitrogen. In addition, this product has other outstanding properties, such as high storage stability and excellent low-temperature behaviour.
What is HVO and how is it produced?
HVO is the abbreviation for "Hydrotreated or Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil", a renewable diesel that is produced from 100 % renewable raw materials such as vegetable oils, waste and residues. For HVO, the raw materials mentioned are converted into hydrocarbons by means of a catalytic reaction with the addition of hydrogen. The use of HVO instead of fossil diesel reduces CO₂- emissions over the entire life cycle by up to 84 % compared to fossil diesel.
How long can alternative fuels be stored?
As a rule of thumb, it is assumed that GTL and HVO have twice the storage stability of conventional B7 diesel fuel and therefore conservatively achieve a stability of 4 to 5 years.
What is LEAF R100 and how is it used?
LEAF R100 consists of 93.1% HVO and 6.9% Bio-Diesel (FAME) and is mainly used as a sustainable fuel for vehicles. It fulfils the EN 15940 Class A standard and offers CO₂- emission- savings of over 84%.
How does the LEAF R50 differ from the LEAF R100?
LEAF R50 combines 43.1% HVO, 6.9% Bio-Diesel (FAME) and 50% fossil diesel, while LEAF R100 consists of 100% biogenic fuels. LEAF R50 offers a net CO₂- emissions saving of around 45%.
What are the specific advantages of LEAF Alpine R50?
LEAF Alpine R50 is optimised for winter conditions and combines 50% HVO and 50% GTL, which enables excellent cold weather performance and net CO₂- emissions savings of around 45%.
